Oklahoma Criminal Lawyer Explains what "Pro Bono" means in Oklahoma Criminal Law
"Pro Bono" means that an attorney is working without pay. This does not happen that often in criminal law and when it does it typically occurs when there are typically issues involved in the case that the attorney believes is so important that they are not only willing to work for free, but they are willing to loose money to work for free. That is what most people do not understand when they ask an attorney to work for free. Not only does the attorney work without pay, they are actually paying for the priveledge of working for free because of the oportunity costs. Over the years Kevin has represented multiple people on a "pro bono" basis, because he believes that money should not be an obsticale to justice.
It is not recommended that you call criminal lawyers at random and ask them if they will take your case "Pro Bono", because many of them will react very negatively. However, even if you find a lawyer with a heart, they typically can not afford to take on many cases "pro bono" or free.
While Kevin can not take on very many cases for free (he also has a family to support), he does offer one of the most afforadable rates in the state, this is remarable considering Mr. Adams's extensive experience as a criminal lawyer. (Mr. Adams has tried over 65 jury trials in city, state and federal court, he has over a dozen acquitals at trial and has gotten more than a dozen people out of prison after he secured the reversal of their convictions.) Mr. Adams is also a recipient of the Clarence Darrow Award given yearly by the Oklahoma Criminal Defense Lawyers Association for outstanding criminal defense.
Part of what has made Mr. Adams so successful as a criminal defense attorney is his ability to effectively communicate with people from all walks of life. Kevin believes he has been blessed with this ability because of his humble working class upbringing. (Kevin is the first one in his family to graduate from college, his father worked in a steel mill and his grandfather was a share cropper. Kevin was not raised around lawyers he was raised around every day people and he knows what it is like to struggle. In addition to serving in the Navy, Kevin has hauled hay, built fences, cut and hauled wood, washed dishes, delivered pizza, bounced in bars, sold cars, repossessed cars, worked in fast food, laid rock, mowed lawns, delivered newspapers and numerous others jobs before becoming a lawyer.) Kevin started working before he was a teeneager and has never stopped. As a boy Kevin remebers his grandfather discussing the legal system by saying "you're innocent until you run outr of money".
If you are indigent and charged with a crime you may qualify for a public defender or court appointed attorney. If someone is able to bond out of jail there is a presumption they can afford a lawyer, to overcome that preseumption a defendant should ask the arraignment judge if you can complete a pauper's affidavit .
