The term "Motion" is simply a lawyers way of asking the court to do something. Some motions are made orally and others are made in writing. A motion can be made by either the prosecution or defense. Common motions are "Motion to Suppress", "Motion to Quash", "Motion for a Bond Reduction", and a "Motion to Withdraw".

There are also many types of motions filed in civil cases, especially in car wreck, auto accident and personal injury cases. For example a "motion for summary judgment" is a commonly filed motion in which one side or the other ask the judge to rule in their favor by finding that no reasonable question of fact exists, so there is no reason to proceed on some or all the issues in the case. In civil cases, unlike criminal cases, parties do not have an absolute right to a trial.
